Fitting guide

An evening in the garage.

Bracket, harness, trigger, aim. Here is the whole job in order — most owners say it took them an hour or two.

Installation manual (PDF)
  1. 01

    Mount with the rail

Screw the rail to a flat spot under the bumper or on the trailer frame; the rubber pad sits between. Keep it level.

  2. 02

    Relay harness from the battery

Red to +, black to the chassis, the fused relay by the battery. The Radar's DT-2 lead clicks into the harness.

  3. 03

    Trigger from the reversing light

Tap the car's reversing-light wire with a shrink connector for the harness's thin trigger wire — the Radar then comes on with reverse.

  4. 04

    LED tail lights? Use XBB

Many new cars switch reverse over the CAN bus. The XBB smart relay replaces the normal relay in the harness and reads the signal from the OBD port.

  5. 05

    Aim it

Level, never tilted up. The flat beam lights the width of the yard without dazzling the car behind.

Keeping it like new

  • Wash the lens, don't scrape it

Polycarbonate scratches. Soak road salt off with water before wiping, and never use an ice scraper on the lens.

  • Grease the connector

A dab of dielectric grease on the DTP pins keeps winter out of the connector for years.

  • Check the bolts after the first week

Brackets settle. One turn on the stabilizer and foot bolts after the first 500 km stops the rattle before it starts.

Owner tips

  • Relay harness, not a splice

Run a relay harness from the battery and take only the trigger from the car's reversing-light wire — with a shrink connector rather than a Scotchlok.

  • Mount low, aim level

The flat beam is designed for low mounting. Level it; tilting it up blinds the driver behind.

  • One is often enough

A single Radar on a Hiace lights the whole width — but most buy the pair.

  • Trailers too

Owners fit them to trailers and quads; 9–36 V covers both systems.

Measured, not promised

The numbers from the lab.

Every Purelux is measured in Valostore's light laboratory in Oulu: output, range at 1 and 0.25 lux, power draw and colour temperature. We publish what we measured, even when it is lower than the box.

Declared by the manufacturer2,100 lm
Measured maximum2,232 lm

Measured output is 6 % above the declared figure. Colour temperature 5,315 K measured; range 47 m at 1 lux and 94 m at 0.25 lux.

Modes · output, range and power — measured

Range is the distance at which the beam still delivers 1 lux (roughly a full moon) or 0.25 lux. Measured at 24 V with a clean lens; full lab curves are available to professional buyers on request.

Why Radar

Low, wide and legal. The reversing light cars should have had.

Factory reversing lights are an afterthought. The Radar is 86 by 56 millimetres and 18 tall, and its beam is flattened in the vertical and opened to 180° in the horizontal — so it lights the trailer, the kerb and the hedge without lighting the neighbour's bedroom.

Valostore measured 2,232 lumens, a little above the 2,100 on the box, at a neutral 5,000 K. It is approved under ECE R23 as a reversing light, rated to −40 °C and sealed to IP69K for a life six inches above the road.

Owners put pairs on XC60s, Sprinters, Hiaces and trailers. The DT-2 lead takes a relay harness, and on CAN-bus cars the XBB relay picks up the reverse signal from the OBD port.
