Fitting guide

An evening in the garage.

Bracket, harness, trigger, aim. Here is the whole job in order — most owners say it took them an hour or two.

Installation manual (PDF)
  1. 01

Pick the spot, then the bracket

Under the number plate with the EU-plate bracket, in the grille, or on a bull bar with a tube mount. The S540 comes with end legs and width-adjustable bottom legs, and the panel has ready places for stabilizer bars.

  2. 02

    Use the relay harness

Run the Pro Serie relay harness from the battery: red to +, black to the chassis, the fused relay next to the battery. The light's DTP connector clicks straight into it.

  3. 03

Take the trigger from the high beam

The harness's thin trigger wire taps the car's high-beam feed, so the light follows your stalk. On a halogen car that is one connector.

  4. 04

LED headlights or CAN bus? Use XBB

Newer cars switch the high beam over the CAN bus. Plug the XBB Dongle into the OBD port and the PowerUnit relay into the Dualrelay harness: it reads the high-beam signal wirelessly, no cutting into looms.

  5. 05

    Wire the parking light

The yellow (orange) and white wires are the two-colour parking light. Connect one of them to the car's position-light feed — or both to a switch and choose by mood.

  6. 06

    Choose the mode

Press the button on the end of the bar to switch between road mode and PowerBoost®. The last mode is remembered, so a road car stays legal without thinking about it.

  7. 07

    Aim it

On a flat stretch at night, adjust the light so the top edge of the beam sits level with the car's own high beam. Tighten the stabilizer bars so it stays there on gravel.

  8. 08

    Stay inside the rules

Under ECE R48 the combined reference number of all high beams on a car — the originals included — may not exceed 100. This light is Ref. 30: check the marking on your headlamps before adding more.

Keeping it like new

  • Wash the lens, don't scrape it

Polycarbonate scratches. Soak road salt off with water before wiping, and never use an ice scraper on the lens.

  • Grease the connector

A dab of dielectric grease on the DTP pins keeps winter out of the connector for years.

  • Check the bolts after the first week

Brackets settle. One turn on the stabilizer and foot bolts after the first 500 km stops the rattle before it starts.

  • PowerBoost is for off-road

Road-traffic approval covers the road mode only. Switch to PowerBoost on forest roads and closed tracks.

Owner tips

  • Under the plate or flush

The adjustable bracket lets the bar sit flush in the grille opening on many cars. Measure the gap between parking sensors first.

  • Road mode is enough

Several owners say the E-approved mode covers normal driving; PowerBoost is for the forest road.

  • Stone guard

A model-specific Panther S540 guard protects the frameless lens on gravel.

  • Adaptive headlights

Works alongside adaptive LED systems — owners run it on an XC60 and a Passat Alltrack.

Measured, not promised

The numbers from the lab.

Every Purelux is measured in Valostore's light laboratory in Oulu: output, range at 1 and 0.25 lux, power draw and colour temperature. We publish what we measured, even when it is lower than the box.

Declared by the manufacturer16,300 lm
Measured maximum15,238 lm

Measured output is 7 % below the manufacturer's declared figure — and that is the number we publish. Colour temperature 5,050 K measured; range 645 m at 1 lux and 1,290 m at 0.25 lux.

Range is the distance at which the beam still delivers 1 lux (roughly a full moon) or 0.25 lux. Measured at 24 V with a clean lens; full lab curves are available to professional buyers on request.

Why Panther S540

Its manufacturer's most popular product. For a reason.

The Panther series combines a combination beam optimised for road traffic with the kind of output that used to need an off-road light. Gen3 added dark optics around the parking light, an easier PowerBoost button and a coated body that shrugs off salt.

The beam is the point: wide enough to light both verges, with a centre that reaches 645 metres at one lux in PowerBoost®. In road mode it is a legal Ref. 30 light that works alongside modern adaptive headlamps without blinding anyone.

Owners call it the easiest light they have ever fitted. The EU-plate bracket, the relay harness and — for CAN-bus cars — the XBB kit turn the job into an hour.
